How to design and make your own ring or pendant

What actually happens, what makes a design work in metal, and what to do if it goes wrong.

I'm Charlotte. I run Cast Knuckle Studio from South East London, and we have cast hundreds of customer designs since we started. This guide covers everything people ask me before they begin. Read it now, or keep it for when your kit arrives.

The short version

You design and carve. We cast and polish.

  1. Your kit arrives with wax, carving tools and a prepaid return envelope.

  2. You carve your design at your kitchen table. Most people spend an hour or two on it.

  3. You put the wax in the prepaid envelope and drop it in the postbox.

  4. We cast it in silver, bronze or gold vermeil, then polish it by hand to a matte or shiny finish.

  5. It comes back to you finished.

How long it takes

Silver and bronze: 3 to 4 weeks from when your wax reaches us.

Gold vermeil: 4 to 6 weeks, because the plating is done separately.

If it is for a particular date, tell us when you order and we will work towards it.

What makes a design work in metal

This is the part people worry about, and it comes down to about four things.

1. Keep it thick enough. Aim for at least 1.5mm of wax under your design anywhere the piece needs to survive being worn. Thinner than that and it will feel fragile, however good it looks in wax. Thickness is not the same as width, which you choose when you order.

2. Texture survives, so use it. Tool marks, fingerprints, scratches and uneven surfaces all come through into the metal. They read as intentional. A perfectly smooth band is actually harder to carve than a textured one.

3. Cut detail deeper than feels necessary. Polishing takes a fine layer off the surface, so anything scratched on lightly can soften or disappear. If you want a line to show, commit to it.

4. Simple holds up best. Most of the pieces I love casting are a band with one clear idea in them. Crowded designs lose their shape once light hits the metal.

If you are not sure whether yours will work, send me a photo before you post it. I will tell you straight, and it takes me two minutes.

Getting a good fingerprint

If your design uses a print, this is the whole job.

  • Clean, dry hands. Any oil or hand cream softens the impression.

  • Use the pad of the finger, not the tip. The centre of the print has the strongest pattern.

  • Heat the wax with a flame until it is just glossy, then test the temperature before anyone presses into it.

  • Press once, firmly, straight down.

  • Lift straight up.

  • A deep print casts far better than a light one. If it looks faint, smooth the wax and go again.

Take three or four and pick the best. Extra wax can be added to your order and we only charge for the materials.

Getting the size right

Fingerprint Kits arrive already sized, so we need the size when you order. If you do not know it, choose the send a ring sizer option at checkout and one comes out with your kit.

On the carve-your-own kits you set the size yourself, cutting the band with the scalpel and trying it on the finger it is for as you carve. Do this at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest, and stop when it slides on easily rather than when it grips. If you are making it for someone else and cannot try it on them, ask and I will pop a sizer in with your kit.

Pendants need no sizing at all, which is why they are the easy answer for a surprise.

What if I mess it up

The honest answer is that almost nothing at the wax stage is a real problem.

  • Wax has broken. Warm it gently and press it back together, or use superglue. Yes, glue.

  • You hate it. Flatten it and start again. The wax is reusable.

  • You are not sure it is finished. Send me a photo before it goes in the envelope.

  • After casting. We hand finish every piece, so we can polish, reshape slightly, or resize on request. There is a 14 day returns policy and a 3 month warranty, and if something is not right we'll find a way to make it right.

Which kit fits you

  • The Fingerprint Kit. The simplest place to start. A fingerprint, a paw print, a memory. A direct imprint, no carving, and it arrives already sized.

  • The Wax Design Kit. Carve whatever you like and choose your metal when you send it back. Best for beginners who want to actually make something.

  • The Gemstone Ring Kit. Carve your ring and we set the stones. One stone is included and you can add up to six, from blue sapphire, pink sapphire, emerald and garnet.

  • Casting Kits for Two. Two people, two sets of wax and tools, one afternoon. Most people order this for an anniversary, an engagement or wedding bands.

  • Pendant kits. A fingerprint pendant or a carved one, in three sizes, on a chain or a choker. No sizing to get wrong.

Questions I get asked

Do I need any experience? No. Most of our customers are first timers. Your job is to design and carve. Ours is the casting and finishing.

Can I do this with children? Yes. Babies' fingerprints are usually clear enough from around six months. Just test the temperature of the wax yourself before a small hand goes anywhere near it.

Can I use a dog's nose or paw print? Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people come to us. Both come out exceptionally well. Have a look at our Get Inspired page for what other people have managed.

Can I add stones? The Gemstone Ring Kit is built for it. For anything more unusual, reply and tell me what you have in mind.

What if I want a pendant instead of a ring? Same process, no sizing. Three sizes and a choice of chain length.

Where are you? A London workshop, between studios in Brixton and East Dulwich. Our pieces have been in ad campaigns and on red carpets, and a fair few customers have gone on to start their own jewellery brands with these kits.
